What to Do When You Find a Leak (Before the Plumber Arrives)

A leaking pipe, a dripping valve, or water where it should not be: the first ten minutes matter. This guide walks through shutting off water safely, protecting floors and belongings, and the details that help a plumber fix the problem faster.

Finding water where it should not be is stressful. The first steps are simple: stop the water, protect what matters, and note what you see.

1. Shut the water off

Use the shutoff valve nearest the problem — under a sink, behind a toilet, or at the water heater. If you cannot find one, use the main shutoff, usually near the meter or where the main line enters the building.

2. Protect floors and belongings

Move rugs, boxes, and electronics away from the wet area. Towels slow the spread but do not fix the source.

3. Avoid electrics near water

Do not touch outlets, switches, or appliances standing in water. If water is near the electrical panel, stay clear and call for help.

4. Note the details

Where is the water coming from? Is it constant or only when a fixture runs? A photo helps the plumber arrive with the right parts.
